Blood and Ash, book one of the Jezebel Files series by Deborah Wilde is a fun and quick read. I initially read Blood and Ash as an eBook thru Kindle Unlimited, and I was later able to listen to it in audiobook format from NetGalley.
The story of Blood and Ash takes place in Vancouver, Canada. Some citizens have magic and others don’t. Ashira Cohen is a private investigator who only takes on non-magical cases (she isn’t allowed to take magical ones). She takes on what she thinks will be a simple missing person case. But after she is attacked, she discovers she has supernatural magical powers and her life gets much more complicated. She has to work on solving the case while dealing with evil organizations, more abductions, and her relationship with Levi (the leader of the magical community in Vancouver).
I would recommend this series to fans of urban fantasy and mystery stories. In terms of the age range for the audience, I would place it at older young adults to adults. Despite the darker scenes in the book, there is some humor to offset that. Prospective listeners and readers should be aware that there are explicit scenes and language usage in this book. The romance seemed secondary in this book, and it seemed as though Wilde was setting up for a bigger romantic storyline later in the series. Overall, Blood and Ash was a solid start to the Jezebel Files books, and I’m looking forward to the later books in the series.
