We Are the Fire by Sam Taylor is a YA fantasy read with a unique premise. Pran and Oskana, the main POV characters, are Tuliikobrets, fire-wielding soldiers of the Vesimaan empire. Instead of some books where the main characters would start as enemies or something and end up in a relationship, this book started with them in a relationship and the events of the story put their bond to the test.
I really liked the world-building in this book and the idea of how ordinary people can be mutated into the Tuliikobrets. The army rankings (Imp, Hellion, Nightmare) were really fun and innovative too. Rootare is definitely one of my favorite book villains this year. However, the reason it is not a 5-star read for me is that the storyline seemed very predictable. I like to be surprised and kept on the edge of my seat but this book didn't do that for me.
Despite the 3-star rating, I will still be reading future releases from Sam Taylor as I think she has a bright future in writing and I'm excited to read what she comes out with next.
