The Nature of Witches was a truly magical read and is one of my favorite books from July 2021.

Most witches are strongest in one season, and weak the other three-fourths of the year. But Clara is an Everwitch, the first in 100 years, with magic tied to all four seasons and the best hope the world has for stopping the damage from climate change. Clara has no interest in such responsibility, however, as her magic has only lead to heartbreak and hurt the people she loves.

I loved the diverse cast in the book, the bisexual MC, and how we get to go on Clara's journey with her. Clara is dealing with a lot between the expectations of being an Everwitch, not knowing how to control her powers, and coping with the grief over the death of one of her past loves. The love interest in the book, Sang is such a cinnamon roll and has easily made his way onto my list of book boyfriends (not an easy feat). His relationship with Clara is so authentic and emotional, and I loved how they opened up to each other naturally over the course of the story.

In addition to the romance and the fantasy elements, I think Griffin makes some very important and valid references to the state of the environment and climate change. She shines a light on some of the problems like extreme weather, natural disasters, forest fires, and tornados. Despite all these bad things that definitely warrant attention, Griffin maintains a hopeful tone throughout the book. There is still a chance to reverse some of the damage to the environment if people start paying more attention.

I will definitely be recommending this book to those who ask in the future. I'm so sad that this is a standalone novel, I wish it was a full series! Everything felt tied up nicely in a bow though, so there are no cliffhangers to worry about for anyone who might be concerned.
